Community Happenings
Stitch Socials
Join us every 2nd Friday of the month at Give Rise Studio (125 South Carroll St., #101, Frederick MD) from 6-8 p.m. for a free and friendly stitch social! Bring all your supplies to work on your stitching and we’ll provide the tables, power, and good company! Feel free to bring a sewing machine to sew, projects to cut out, or a hand project like knitting, crochet, needlepoint etc.!
Join my email list or follow me on social media to find out about our themed community service nights! Every couple months we come together to knock out a bunch of projects for a local community group!
Craft Swaps
Every few months, I partner with Give Rise Studio for a craft swap! We’d love to take extra craft supplies and fabric off your hands! Everything that isn’t taken at the swap will be donated to various community groups - so you can feel good about parting ways with it! (Do you know of a group who could use craft supplies? Let me know and I’ll reach out!)
How does this work, you ask? Well...
✂️ Once the swap is announced, you sign up for a time to drop off your extra fabric, sewing supplies, and crafting supplies before the event during your chosen drop off time. We are only accepting drop offs before the event, not on the day of.
✂️ On the day of the event, show up ready to take LOTS of great stuff! Everything is 100% free! Get there early for the best selection!
✂️ You don’t have to donate in order to come take! We always have more than enough stuff!

What am I sewing?
Walker caddies (tie on and saddle bag style) for patients recovering from hip and knee surgeries.
Small and large size tote bags for patients to keep medications or materials distributed at the Cancer Center.
Clothing protectors (a.k.a. bibs with a pocket at the bottom) for nursing home residents.
Anything else you can think of that benefit Frederick Health Hospital, nursing homes, other care facilities, schools or other humanitarian uses!
What am I sewing it out of?
Frederick Health Hospital has extra material called “Blue Wrap” that they don’t want to end up in landfills. Blue Wrap is a non-woven material—in a double layer construction—that is used to wrap surgical equipment that enters the autoclave for sterilization. It cuts and sews easily, does not ravel, and can be washed and dried. It is comparable to the non-woven cloth used to make supermarket carriers that have "good for approximately 125 uses" printed on the bottom. The two layers are fused together along the lengthwise edges and may be used together or separated.
Is there a pattern to follow?
Yes! You can find a plethora of patterns on the Care Wear website, but for these projects specifically:
Walker Caddies:Page 57 of the pattern newsletter
Tote Bags:Page 90 & 91 of the pattern newsletter
Bonnie Hagerman has a sample of the "Adult Clothing Protector" that you are welcome to copy. Contact Bonnie at carewear@comcast.net.
I want to help! What are the next steps?
Contact Ms. Yoona Deguzman at ydeguzman@frederick.health to set up a date to pick up the blue wrap. (Give at least two weeks notice for the pick-up date.)
Frederick Health Hospital accepts walker caddies and tote bags, or reach out to local nursing homes to see if they need anything or would like adult clothing protectors.
Send me pictures of your finished items so I can help celebrate your hard work!
